I love websites like this. And who doesn’t like Shepard Fairey’s work – even if they don’t like Obama? I was pleased to hear that the original “Hope” portrait has been acquired by the US National Portrait Gallery in Washington.
While I know that in some ways it is just a symbol, having a black man as president of the United States – arguably the most powerful country in the world – is still a powerful statement, a hopeful sign for all people of African descent. I’m hoping that his presence on the world stage is going to dispel stereotypical notions of black inferiority that are still prevalent in North American society. I hope, for my nephew Xavier especially, that this presidency brings change.
