Today’s outing was to Skagway for the Santa Train with our friends from Vancouver, Hugh and Wendy and their kids Simon and Owen. Our friend Paula came too. A 9am departure meant that the 2 hour drive included some lovely morning light.
Every year, the White Pass & Yukon Route railway offers a free train ride with Santa for anyone who gets themselves to Skagway Alaska in December. It’s a pretty cool thing. There is not only no charge for the ride, photos with Santa or the little gift bag for the kiddies, but all of the employees there are also volunteering their time for the event. At 11am we hung around the train station waiting for Mr. Claus.
I think Paula and I were the only who adults who sat with Santa.
Then it was off for a 16 mile round trip excursion into the Pass aboard the train.
I had to google what the heck this “On to Alaska With Buchanan” sign was all about. This is a sign visible from the train, about 7 miles up the tracks from Skagway. Apparently George Buchanan was a Detroit coal merchant who brought kids to Alaska for adventure trips in the 1920s. The full (but fairly short) background explanation can be read here.
After our ride we warmed up with yummy Alaskan beer at pretty much the only restaurant in town that was open (Pizza Station). Simon and I hammed it up for the camera.
Since Alaska is one time zone behind us, the sun set at 3pm. The snow topped mountains looked amazing as they glowed white against the darkening blue sky. That’s Wendy pointing her camera at me.
But oh yes- dressember!! Here’s dress #10 – one I picked up at a second hand store last weekend. I’m standing in front of a WP&YR rotary snow plow.
